• "Steps towards a Universal Ecological Civilization"

    Tällberg, Sweden, 28-31 May 2026

    Background and Purpose

Existing global cooperation is struggling to resolve the accelerating breakdown of humanity’s relationship with the Earth, and as trust in international mechanisms weakens, new approaches to cooperation, governance, and responsibility must be found. This disrupted global landscape opens a space for re-imagination. The Aurora Borealis Foundation (ABF), founded in the tradition of the Tällberg Foundation, convenes leaders willing to engage with this challenge at a fundamental level: we ask “How on Earth can we live together, we the humans and we with Nature?” We believe that the knowledge, attention, and expertise already existing on the ‘what’ and the ‘why’ of this question suffice. The ABF is now convening a gathering in Tällberg to focus on the ‘how’: how the shift toward wide-scale, ‘glocal’ governance might be initiated, and how a process and practice can be jointly create that might gather momentum.

    About the Gathering

From 28–31 May 2026, the Aurora Borealis Foundation will convene around 100 leaders from diverse sectors in Tällberg, Sweden, under the theme “Steps towards a Universal Ecological Civilisation.” The gathering will explore how the concept of Ecological Civilisation— already shaping long-term thinking and practice in China through the constitution—might offer a valuable point of departure for a broader global conversation. The focus is on breaking through stalled global consensus, building trust, embracing diversity and articulating a shared direction for aligning human systems with the rules of the biosphere. Rather than proposing a single model, the gathering explores how this idea can evolve into a shared and universal horizon, informed by many cultures, disciplines, and experiences. The programme design aims to move beyond conventional discussion and jointly explore innovative governance approaches grounded in the philosophy of the Three Harmonies. Harmony between humans and nature, harmony among people, and harmony within people.

    Preparations

The meeting is carefully curated, with preparations well underway that entail bringing the perspective of each participant to shape the programme in advance of the physical gathering. Participants are invited based on their experience in leadership, innovation, and systems-level change. The design process emphasises deep listening, cross-cultural exchange, and practical orientation, ensuring the time in Tällberg is both reflective and focussed on moving into new territory rather than tinkering with existing solutions and concepts.

    Outcomes

The gathering is structured around four concrete deliverables:

    1. A Universal Declaration of Togetherness. We ask: How on Earth can we live together? Any answer must embrace the three harmonies: harmony with Nature, harmony among humans, and harmony within oneself.
    2. A definition of values and principles that could underpin a constitution of "glocal" governance that aligns humans and the biosphere
    3. A scaffold for the practical building and implementation of a governance mechanism to deliver the above.
    4. An intention to learn about practice, together with China, sharing experiences of an evolving Ecological Civilisation.

The outcomes from the Tällberg gathering will serve as the foundation for a larger international forum planned for Beijing later in 2026.
